The Challenge
Trenord, the leading operator specializing in local rail transport that manages the suburban and regional railway service in Lombardy, needed a system that would automate both the issuance of season passes and single daily tickets. The challenge was to create a flexible solution that could operate both at station ticket counters and at third-party operators such as newsstands, tobacconists, and bars.
The Solution
In December 2012, we developed DSD (Digital Service Distribution), an innovative system that comes in two versions: DSDX for Trenord station ticket counters and DSDY for third-party operators. Currently, there are about 31 DSDX stations installed (with a planned expansion to 60) and 240 DSDY stations throughout Lombardy.
The system was designed with a modular and flexible structure that ensures:
- Complete configurability of fares and card profiles
- Offline operation with automatic synchronization
- Management of contactless smart cards and paper tickets
- Integration with existing sales systems
